i think new york makes you like this--it makes you find the positive in the negative and the negative in the positive. how else could you be able to feel such affection for a place that doesn't need you, want you, or care much about you? how else could you feel comfortable walking its streets? how else could you live there if you didn't find the abandoned and the overbuilt, the lonely people in crowds that look up or down or out but not at, the early morning and the late at night, the new screeching against the old, beautiful? how could you go about life if you were not somehow content with being alone in seas of people who seem to be not alone at all?

i know i should never move back but how could i stay away?
it's one of the most beautiful places i know.
